MIDI Note Names: When the DAW Octave and Plugin Octave Don't Match

Updated over 2 months ago

If you're having issues setting up keyswitches or expression maps then the first thing to check is the naming scheme of your plugin. As you can see below, by default the BBC plugin (along with the rest of our catalogue) use Middle C (MIDI Note 60) = C4, which has been considered the standard for musical notation for a long time. However with the rise of MIDI, the standard of C-2 being the lowest key (MIDI Note 0) grew among certain hardware developers and created a divide in the industry as this meant that MIDI Note 60, middle C, would be C3.

In practical terms Middle C can be whatever octave you want it to be. However since most users will use either C3 or C4, we do provide the option to change the display in our plugins from the plugin settings.

If you're working in Logic, you can change the setting within the DAW itself to adjust to your liking.

  • Logic Pro > Settings > Display > "Display Middle C As:"
