Phoenix FAQs

Answers to common questions about Phoenix, the hybrid synthesizer created by BT and Spitfire Audio.

What is Phoenix?

Phoenix is a hybrid synthesiser for composition and cinematic sound design, created by BT and Spitfire Audio. It combines six sound generating engines, deep modulation, a curated sound library and 37 effects in one instrument.

What synthesis engines are included?

Phoenix combines spectral wavetable synthesis, six operator FM, sampling, two operator FM transients, a sub oscillator and a noise oscillator. These sources can interact through cross modulation, allowing a patch to blend sampled and synthesised sounds.

What sounds are included?

Phoenix includes 552 factory presets and a library of recordings from BT’s collection and Spitfire Audio. The source material includes textures, instruments, transients, noise and wavetables. You can start with a preset or build your own sound from these materials.

How much storage will Phoenix need?

The total size of the library is 40GB, however due to the installation process, twice this size will be needed, please allow 80GB+ available free space on your drive for install.

Can I import my own sounds?

Yes. SFZ import is supported and you can load your own audio into the sampler.

What makes Phoenix stereo?

Phoenix has independent left and right synthesis paths within each voice. Controls such as wavetable position, spectral processing, phase warping and modulation can move differently on each side, so stereo movement can begin at the sound source.

Does Phoenix support MPE?

Yes. Phoenix supports full MPE expression and up to 16 voices of stereo polyphony. Available voice count in a session may also depend on the complexity of the patch and your computer.

How does modulation work?

Phoenix has a modulation matrix with no fixed slot limit, eight multi stage curve sequencers, random generators and a probability arpeggiator. You can use these to create evolving sounds and rhythmic movement.

What effects are included?

Phoenix includes 37 effects, including reverbs, delays, distortion, filters, dynamics and spectral processing. Effects can be arranged in its effect chains to shape a patch further.

Can I use Phoenix without an internet connection? *

Not currently. The computer running Phoenix must stay continuously connected to the internet while you use it. Offline operation is not currently supported, however this is a feature we will be introducing in a future update.

What plugin formats are available to use in my DAW?

Phoenix is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats.

Does Phoenix require Kontakt?

No. Phoenix is a dedicated plugin and cannot be loaded in Kontakt.

What are the system requirements?

This instrument is a high-performance hybrid synthesizer combining six simultaneous synthesis engines, sample playback, spectral processing, FM synthesis and 16-voice full MPE. System load varies according to preset complexity, polyphony, effects and synthesis configuration.

macOS Requirements

Minimum

  • macOS 15 Monterey or later

  • Apple M1 or later

Intel Mac

  • 2019 or later

  • Intel Core i9, 8-core or better

All Mac Systems

  • 16 GB RAM

  • SSD required

  • 80+ GB available disk space

  • 64-bit AU, VST3 or AAX compatible host

Recommended

  • Apple M2 Pro, M3 or newer

  • 32 GB RAM

  • Fast internal or external SSD/NVMe storage

  • 80+GB or more available disk space

  • Windows: VST3, AAX

  • 16-voice full MPE

  • 64-bit hosts only

Performance

CPU usage can vary significantly according to the combination of synthesis engines, polyphony, MPE input, effects and preset complexity. All six synthesis engines can operate simultaneously.

For CPU-intensive presets, high-polyphony MPE performance and systems close to the minimum specification, an audio buffer size of 512 samples is recommended.

Lower buffer sizes may be used on higher-performance systems where sufficient CPU headroom is available.

Can I use this library on more than one computer?

Yes, our license allows for up to two installations at a time for a single user.

How do I move this library to another computer?
